Day 4 of the International Children's Theater Festival Subotica - report

On Wednesday, September 22, the fourth day of the International Children's Theater Festival Subotica, two plays were performed in the Competition Program on the Jadran Stage of the Subotica’s National Theater: Three Times King by the German Gruene Sosse Theater and Peter and the Wolf by the Children's Theater of Republika Srpska.

The play Three Times King talks about the fact that being a king is not only a child's wish, but that being a king also means being rich, ordering, having fun, being respected by your people and much more. Being a king means having obligations and duties as well. "Who knows how much stress and what terrible problems the king is experiencing? Who knows what his secret desires, cravings and longings are? ", says the synopsis of the play.

One of the three main actors in the play, Willy Combecher, commented on the very stormy and joyful reactions of the children in the audience during the play: “In every country, the reactions of children are the same. At this age, they are not so much influenced by others, so they react the way they want. We try to keep up with the children. We love when they cheer and laugh. They don't have to be quiet, nor do they need to be silenced by teachers.”

Play Peter and the Wolf by the Children's Theater of Republika Srpska is an unusual musical story, written by the great Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Like any story, it has its heroes, and here the heroes are the instruments of a symphony orchestra. In order for children to recognize them, the instruments are presented by actors. Through the story and beautiful pictures, children learn to listen, understand and love symphonic music, which was the goal and desire of the great Prokofiev.

"In the catalog of the Festival, the golden connection that Banja Luka has with Subotica is revealed, and that is a really strong fact that our two performances won and left with the Grand Prix from the Festival. We look forward to every selection, when they recognize that we should come, to show in such a serious theater competition what is the puppetry of Republika Srpska like today," said Ljiljana Labovi Marinkovic, director of the Children's Theater of Republika Srpska.

"The position of our theater is that our mission, as a national theater for children, is not to entertain and please children, but to use our repertoire to strongly determine them to be future small academic citizens and great intellectuals," explained Ljiljana Labović Marinković and added: "Our ally, in order to do this play, was the director of the music school and professors at the music school in Banja Luka, who gave us the right instruments so that the kids could learn to recognize wind instruments during the show. A year after playing that piece, the director of the music school told me that the interest in enrolling wind instruments had increased. As a national theater, we strive to nurture performances that communicate with all these much-needed factors and important intellectual, educational and academic lines, so that in the time of kitsch we are the ones holding the bright torch of pure art."

On Wednesday, at 5 pm, at the Hotel Patria, was presented the publication "70 Years of Youth: Youth Theater Sarajevo" by Dubravka Zrnčić-Kulenović, and at the same time in the Eurocinem, the audience could watch the film Bigfoot Family.

On the fifth day of the Festival, on Thursday, September 23, the program includes two performances in the competition program: To Theater with Love by the Children's Theater Subotica (10 am at the Children's Theater Subotica) and On the trail by the City Theater Zorin dom Karlovac (4 pm, Jadran Stage, Subotica’s National Theater). The presentation of the book Puppet Simulacra by Dr. Zoran Đerić, the programmer of the Competition Program of the Festival, is scheduled for 5 pm at the Hotel Patria. Film Sune - Best Man by Swedish director Jon Holmberg is on the program at the Eurocinema at 5 pm.

All programs at the International Children's Theater Festival Subotica are open to visitors and free.
