Performances from Serbia, Italy, and Poland played on the fourth day of the International Festival of Children’s Theaters in Subotica

                                                                                September 25, 2019

On Wednesday, September 25, three performances were performed in the competition program of the International Children’s Festival Subotica: „Beauty and the Beast“ by Children’s Theater Subotica, „The Opera Fridge“ by the Antonio Pancuto Theater from Italy, and „The Fine Greenbird“ by Lalka Theater from Poland.

„Beauty and the Beast“ was performed on the stage of the Children’s Theater in Subotica. The well-known story of a beautiful girl who voluntarily agrees to be imprisoned by a cruel beast to save her father has undergone a new and distinct interpretation on this occasion. „We didn’t follow Disney’s version but the classic, original story. Our beast does not look like someone is disguised as an animal, but rather it wears its castle on its head and cannot be released from it – its world and its closedness. Then there is love, the girl who opens it all up, ”explained actress Elvira Gal.

One of the most original performances in the festival repertoire, „The Opera Fridge“, came from Italy. The fridge turns into an opera scene, where the audience sits on the shelves in the door, between cheese and butter, and the orchestra prepares to perform in a fruit and vegetable drawer, says a short description of the play by Antoni Pancut, the author, set designer, puppeteer, and actor.

„For me, this act was like a dream. One night I was thirsty and went to the kitchen, but I was drowsy and went to bed immediately afterward. During the night, I designed the whole show. It transforms our reality and is very simple for children, the fridge is small, but there is everything in it, ”explained Pancuto, adding that he is also involved in opera scenography, which is why he knows the mechanisms of it. „I think a grand opera is possible in a small fridge,“ the author concluded wittily, on the occasion of his performance at the “ Dezso Kosztolányi “ Theater.

„Fine Greenbird“ by Theater „Lalka“ from Poland, performed on the „Jadran“ stage of the National Theater, is a story about a king who, wanting to know what his subjects think about him, disguises himself as a stray dog and thus accidentally hears the conversation of three sisters. He is so enchanted by their sincerity that he decides to fulfill their three wishes, but then it turns out that one person’s happiness can provoke the envy of others. „For me, the most interesting form here is the combination of del art comedy and puppet theater, and also beautiful, handmade scenery, ”said one of the participants in Bartosh Blachur’s play.

On the fifth day of the festival, September 26, there will be three more performances in the competition program: „Beside You“ by the YUN Theater from Korea (Children’s Theater Subotica, 10 am), „ The House of Hedgehog “ by the Children’s Theater of Republika Srpska („Jadran“ Stage at the National Theater , 12h) and „Shoes“ by „La tête à l’envers“ theater from Belgium („Jadran“ stage at the National Theater, 6pm).
