The play’s main character is an old fisherman who lives modestly in a dilapidated hut by the sea with his wife. His life is about to change upon catching a golden fish that promises him the fulfillment of his wishes if he releases it back into the sea. He does so without asking for anything in return. However, his wife becomes terribly angry and orders him to ask the magical fish for a new trough. After she’s convinced that the fish is successful in fulfilling her wishes, the old lady becomes mean demanding more and more on a daily basis – starting with a new house, clothes, jewelry to servants and guards. Even becoming an empress was not enough for her, so she asks to rule the seas and have the golden fish as her servant. Upon hearing that, the fish cancels the spell and the old woman ends up with nothing.
