A puppet show based on an old Chinese legend, performed in the style of traditional Chinese shadow theater. In 2006, the legend was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and in 2009, the art form of the traditional Chinese shadow puppetry itself was also included to the UNESCO list. Stylistically, the legend of Butterflies in Love is a tragedy, but – adhering to the Confucian philosophy of life and poetics in art - it omits the realistic harshness of a tragic finale in which all the main characters perish. Instead, its tragedy is expressed poetically - through the symbol of the butterfly. The butterfly represents love, beauty, faithfulness, faith, hope… but also the brevity and transience of earthly life. Therefore, life should be lived lightly and joyfully… as if it were the wings of a butterfly itself.
